Groundbreaking Research on Probiotics and Weight Loss
Jun 1st
Mark Hyman, M.D. explains how recent studies show that weight gain is caused by inflammation in the body. If you can reduce the inflammation, you will lose weight and will also be reducing the likelihood that you will suffer from different diseases like heart disease, diabetes and other auto-immune diseases. Part of reducing the inflammation has to do with diet, however, Dr. Hyman also recommends taking probiotics because the problem actually begins in the gut. Please watch this fascinating video to learn about the process of how your body produces inflammation and how you can reduce it.

Can Probiotics Help with Weight Loss?
May 28th
I just read an interesting book titled The Wonder of Probiotics by John R. Taylor, N.D and Deborah Mitchell. The front cover reads that they have a 30 day plan to boost energy, enhance weight loss, heal GI problems, prevent disease, and slow aging. That sounds wonderful and it also sounds like it’s doable because I can do anything if it’s just for 30 days! I would love to have more energy, prevent disease, slow aging, and lose weight, but I’m going to focus on weight loss first. (Vacation is on the horizon and I would be really happy losing 10 – 20 pounds.) So today is day 5 with my new regimen of probiotics. I’ve taken probiotics in the past but this time is different. First of all I must admit that I’ve been too inconsistent in taking vitamins and probiotics. So I’m taking the instructed dose at every meal and also taking more than I’ve ever taken before. I’m also taking an additional digestive enzyme to aid in digestion as well as the probiotics.
So in five days, I’ve lost 3.5 pounds & I’ve found that my sugar and carbohydrate cravings have totally disappeared. That’s pretty miraculous for me. I think I have amazing willpower but always wind up submitting to cravings at one point or another. It seems to derail my efforts every time I try to lose some weight. Another item that’s important to note is that I was unable to exercise during the first 5 days. Between a lower back issue and a crazy week with my schedule, I was unable to get to the gym, which is something I intend to start this weekend.
Right from the first day, I felt like I had great energy. I focused on making healthy choices for meals and snacks and have had absolutely NO cravings for sweets. I’ll keep everyone up to date on my progress. If probiotics is really the missing element in helping me meet my weight loss goals, I’ll be shouting the news from the rooftops! The probiotic below is the one I’ve been using.
I’m also taking a plant based enzyme at every meal in addition to the probiotics…
Who Has Heard of Kombucha?
May 25th
I was recently introduced to kombucha by a friend of mine who is extremely healthy. She makes her own at home and really enjoys the whole experience. Kombucha is a tea that originated in Russia. It is known for its fermented qualities and proponents believe that it detoxifies the body. The tea becomes fermented using a mass of microorganisms called a mushroom or a kombucha culture.
I have not yet had an opportunity to try it because I just started a probiotic experiment through a book I’m reading. I’ll be writing more about that in my next blog post. So I’m going to wait until after this week is over to try the kombucha. You can purchase it in different flavors and it can be found in the refrigerated section of your favorite health food store. I would advise just sipping this drink a little each day until your body gets used to it. Drinking too much at first may have an undesired effect! Here is a video to help you learn a little more about kombucha. Who knows, you may want to try making your own at home…
I’d love to hear about your experiences either drinking kombucha or making it at home!
Is Your Child Overweight?
May 22nd
As we all know, childhood obesity is an epidemic. It is quick and easy to eat fast food, fried foods, junk food, processed food… At the same time, many children are not getting the proper exercise. There are video games, computer games, and other indoor sedentary activities and distractions that can prevent a child from running around and using up the energy they are consuming.
Physically, these children are being set up for health problems that will follow them into their adult lives. Emotionally, these children are belittled, picked on, and emotionally tortured by peers. Serious issues with self esteem that again will follow them into their adult lives are likely.
This short video will give parents some good ideas about how to shop and plan out meals and snacks for the entire family.
Parents need to know that there is help available. There are many programs designed to give parents the information, and support that they need to help their children. Here are a few website to explore if you are looking for more information:
Is Organic Really Better? (Part 4 of 4)
May 20th
In case you missed any of the other segments, I’ll first re-cap my previous posts. In the first segment, I took a look at what makes a product organic. In the second part, we looked at the nutritional value of produce when pesticides are used. I gave recommendations for which produce might be the most important to buy organically. Part 3 had a focus on different places where you can purchase organic produce and part 4 will wrap it all together and answer the question of whether or not organic really is better.
We know that nothing has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt when it comes to buying organic versus non-organic. However, a new study has revealed a link between pesticides in children’s bodies and ADHD. I don’t know about you, but I would rather be safe than sorry. As I pointed out in an earlier segment, there are many alternatives if you are on a budget and buying only organic food is not an option. There are certain fruits and vegetables that have a higher likelihood of allowing pesticides into your body. If you can only afford to buy some organic produce, here is a list of items that you should focus on: celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, kale, cherries, potatoes and imported grapes.
In my humble opinion, I believe that the risk of buying non-organic food is too great and I’m not willing to take any chances. Over the course of my life, I’ve watched a big change occur when it comes to children, their behavior, and their illnesses. There’s a reason for these changes and until we know for certain what has brought them about, we do have some control over what we put into our bodies.
Are Pesticides Related To ADHD?
May 18th
An article found at WebMD indicates that a US study has been done linking pesticides to a higher risk of ADHD. (ADHD stands for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.) Researchers examined the urine of 1139 children between the ages of 8 – 15 and found that higher levels of pesticides in the body increased the likelihood of developing ADHD. The research was based on the general population in the United States. There are about forty organophosphates (pesticides) that are currently being used in the United States.
These pesticides are known to be toxic to the human body. Apparently even low levels are having an impact on children. I have been writing a four part series about whether or not it is wise to buy organic food. I will definitely be keeping this information in mind as I write the last part of my series. This article stresses the need for more research and highly recommends that adults thoroughly wash all produce before allowing children to eat it. If you would like to read the article in its entirety, just click this link.

Is Organic Really Better? (Part 3 of 4)
May 11th
Today I’ll be taking a look at where we can buy organic produce. Within the last few years, organic food has been appearing at our regular supermarkets. (At least in the Eastern United States it has.) There are also stores like Whole Foods and Wegmans that offer organic products. However, today I’d like to explore some additional places where you can locate this pesticide free food.
Here is a list of options when it comes to finding organic food for your home:
- Grocery Stores
- Farmer’s Markets
- Online Stores
3. UliMana
Finding a farm in your area is a fantastic way of buying delicious produce while supporting your local economy. Local farms provide an opportunity to buy the freshest and most nutritious food. There are many different ways that farmers sell their goods. There are farmer’s markets, u-pick, a farm stand and a food coop. Here is an excellent website called Community Supported Agriculture. (Also known as CSA) You can learn all about locally grown produce and the many different ways to purchase it in your neighborhood.
In my last segment about organic food, I will put it all together and make a recommendation regarding whether organic food is really worth the extra money.
Review of The Holistic Baby Guide
May 8th
The Holistic Baby Guide was written by Randall Neustaedter and recently came out in paperback. He has worked for over thirty five years as a holistic medicine specialist as well as being a licensed naturopath. Having five children in itself qualifies him as a specialist! In this book, Randall offers parents natural solutions for the following infant ailments:
- colic
- diaper rash
- eczema
- ear infections
- colds
- digestive issues
- reflux
- cradle cap
- fevers
- strengthening the immune system
Neustaedter offers a holistic treatment plan that eliminates the need for prescription drugs. That plan includes natural remedies such as nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes, and natural medicines. He presents a thorough argument as to why babies should be allowed to heal their own bodies through natural means instead of through the use of chemical medications and antibiotics. This is a great reference book that should be a welcome addition to a parent’s book shelf.
Is One Type of Probiotic Better Than Others?
May 6th
If you are interested in purchasing a probiotic supplement, you can be overwhelmed by the amount of options that are available. There are many different types of probiotics and many different brands. Dr. Joseph Mercola has seen thousands of patients in his many years of practicing medicine. In the following video, he explains how finding the correct probiotic for you is a matter of trial and error. However, he did suggest that there was one specific type of probiotic that generally seemed to work well for most people. The following video explains in more detail…
Dr. Joseph Mercola suggests that lactobacillus sporogenes is the one type of probiotic that works for most people. Reducing cholesterol is one of the many benefits that people see after taking this specific type of probiotic.
